Daily Descriptions

  • Monday 4/15

  • Today, I worked remotely and compiled notes for the November handout on folic acid into an outline. I also began creating the Canva document. This took roughly 3 hours.

  • Tuesday 4/16

  • Today, I worked remotely and wrote all of the paragraphs for the November handout on the history of folic acid fortification, 1990s fortification of cereal grains initiatives, folic acid deficiency and health risks, the role of folic acid in both men and women, and tips for increasing folic acid awareness and intake. This took roughly 3 hours.

  • Wednesday 4/17

  • Today, I helped facilitate the Sleep and Allergy screening at the Streets and Drainage Department. Last month’s Sleep and Allergy screening was such a hit that we did another screening for this month. Afterwards, I worked remotely and finalized the November Canva handout and quiz. Then, I began taking notes on December’s handout on the opioid epidemic. This all took a little over 6 hours.

  • Thursday 4/18

  • Today, I helped facilitate the Gentle Yoga session at the Ben-Epps Airport. We had to jump through some leaps and hurdles to make it work, but it ended up running smoothly and was my favorite yoga session thus far! Then, I continued to gather notes and compile them into an outline for December’s handout on the opioid epidemic, which will include information on the historical significance of opioids, how opioids interact in the body, the classifications of opioids, actions to take to prevent opioid dependence, and facts and statistics about the ongoing epidemic. This all took roughly 4 hours.

  • Friday 4/19

  • Today, I began writing the paragraphs for the opioid handout based on the outline I created yesterday. I also began creating the Canva document. This took roughly 3 hours.

Weekly Summary

This week was marked by diligent remote work and engaging community involvement. On Monday and Tuesday, I focused on crafting a comprehensive outline and writing paragraphs for a November handout on folic acid, showcasing my ability to synthesize findings and tailor messages for diverse audiences. Wednesday, I contributed to a successful Sleep and Allergy screening event before delving into preparations for December's handout on the opioid epidemic. Thursday involved facilitating a rewarding Gentle Yoga session and furthering research on the opioid epidemic, demonstrating my facilitation skills and commitment to thorough information gathering. Finally, Friday was dedicated to drafting paragraphs and creating a Canva document for the opioid handout. Throughout the week, I demonstrated competencies such as identifying data gaps, using digital media for engagement, and assessing audience knowledge and needs, all crucial for effective health communication and education.

Responsibilities & Competencies

  • 1.2.6- Identify data gaps.

  • I met this competency by gauging what information should be included on the folic acid handout based on what the general population already knows. For example, many people know about folic acid in pregnant women, so I included information on folic acid in men as well.

  • 6.5.6- Use digital media to engage audience(s) (e.g., social media management tools and platforms).

  • I met this competency by developing an engaging Canva handout on folic acid.

  • 4.4.6- Synthesize findings.

  • I met this competency by writing paragraphs on folic acid based on the notes and outline I gathered previously in the week.

  • 1.4.5- Report assessment findings.

  • I met this competency by finalizing the November handout and quiz and disseminating it to Kendra.

  • 1.3.2- Determine the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, skills, and behaviors that impact the health and health literacy of the priority population(s).

  • I met this competency by assessing the general understanding of the opioid epidemic by ACCGov employees. Most Americans know about the ramifications of the opioid epidemic, however I wanted to provide a more in-depth review on the historical significance of the epidemic and the role opioids play in the body in regard to addiction.

  • 1.2.1- Identify primary data, secondary data, and evidence-informed resources.

  • I met this competency by assessing the validity of various sources I found to gather notes for December’s handout.

  • 6.5.3- Use facilitation skills with large and/or small groups.

  • I met this competency by helping to facilitate the Gentle Yoga session at the Ben-Epps airport.

  • 6.3.3- Tailor message(s) for the audience(s).

  • I met this competency by writing out the paragraphs for December’s handout at a health literacy level applicable to all ACCGov employees, which I have found to be at an 8th to 9th grade level.

Reflection

This week's journey was a blend of dedicated remote work and meaningful community engagement. On Monday, I kicked off by immersing myself in compiling detailed notes for the November handout on folic acid, and shaping them into a structured outline. I also engaged in creating a visually appealing Canva document to complement the content. Tuesday saw a continuation of this productive flow as I delved into crafting comprehensive paragraphs covering various aspects of folic acid, from its historical fortification to its crucial role in both men and women's health. This process, spanning over two days, demonstrated my ability to synthesize complex findings into digestible, informative content while catering to diverse audience needs.

Midweek, I transitioned from the virtual realm to on-ground involvement, assisting in facilitating a Sleep and Allergy screening event. Drawing from the success of the previous month's screening, we organized another session, showcasing ACC Wellness’s commitment to community health outreach. Following this, I added the finishing touches on the November handout and quiz, and embarked on preliminary research for December's focus on the opioid epidemic. .

Thursday presented a delightful opportunity to engage with the community in a more serene setting, as I contributed to facilitating a Gentle Yoga session at the Ben-Epps Airport. Despite facing logistical challenges, the session unfolded smoothly, fostering a sense of fulfillment among participants. Post-session, I resumed my research efforts, meticulously gathering and organizing notes for the forthcoming December handout on the opioid epidemic.

The week I concluded with a focused effort on Friday, as I translated the outlined structure into cohesive paragraphs for the opioid handout. Simultaneously, I began crafting the accompanying Canva document, ensuring both visual appeal and informational depth. This displays my proficiency in content creation and digital media utilization, which I have found to be key skills vital for engaging diverse audiences effectively.

Throughout the week, I integrated various responsibilities and competencies, from identifying data gaps to tailoring messages for specific audience segments. Each task served as a testament to my commitment to advancing health literacy and promoting well-being within the community.
